Capitol Tour, Part II

We're planning our next tour, where we will continue to visit the wineries of the Loudon County. It will be a New Years tour, as we will be going January 2nd and 3rd. We'll probably be a little less ambitious on this next trip.

We've been going through our photos. This process helps us remember who we met, what we drank, what we saw, etc. at each winery. We always get someone, usually the server, to take a picture of the four of us. Our hard drives are getting full!

Capitol Tour I

We just got back from our first Capitol Wine Tour. Day 1 was both ambitious and successful. We hit 9 wineries, beginning at Dry Mills at 10:30 AM, and we finished at Village Winery after 5:00. We met some great people and tasted some fantastic (and some not-so-fantastic) wine. All these wineries were within 10 miles or so of each other, so distance was on our side. We even had time for a sit down lunch (but who had the idea to order beer?).

Day 2 was even better. Without the challenge of having to hit so many wineries, we were able to relax, take our time, and enjoy our stops. Tops on our list was our visit to Lost Creek, where we had great wine, top-of-the-line burgers, and excellent music.

Rating System

I think we need to come up with a simple rating system to help us remember each winery.

Welcome to the PoLo Wine Club Blog

The PoLo Wine Club members (all four of them) have one mission: to visit every winery in the state of Virginia. The actual number appears elusive. On our visit to Crooked Run last September, they told us they had been only open a week and that they were #144.

So far, we've been to 49 wineries, most of them during one of our Magical Mystery Tours, but a few by themselves. So far we have done the Long and Winery Road I (Charlottesville area); the Long and Winery Road II (Northern Neck and Fredericksburg); Winestock I (northern part of I-81); Winestock II (Waynesboro area); the infamous Manassas U-Turn Tour (MUTT), the day after the VA Wine Festival; and the disappointing Eastern Shore Tour. This weekend will be part I of the Capitol Tour, which will include the dozens of wineries in Northern VA. We have hit as few as one winery in a day and as many as seven, but records are made to be broken.

My favorite so far? Stone Mountain, about 45 minutes from Massanutten. The drive up the mountain is wild, but the view and the wine are both spectaculor. Other sentimental favorites: Cooper (for the girls), Kluge (for the cheese), Ingleside (for the variety and generosity), Mattaponi (AKA "Mad Pony" . . . for their back porch), and Crooked Run (last but certainly not least).

Any disagreements?
